Three Big Reasons Why Product Photography is Important in eCommerce

This short article will give you three BIG reasons why product photography
is very important in eCommerce.

A picture is worth a thousand words. In fact, as the world becomes more and more digital and the average consumer’s attention span grows shorter and shorter, that picture is now worth several thousand words.

Studies show that 75% of online shoppers rely primarily on the images they see before them, and will rarely read the product description, and let’s assume that the 25% of consumers who do read the product description will also take the time to review the product images too.

Product Images Increase Conversion Rates

Let’s say you’ve invested heavily in bringing people to your website through social media marketing, Google Pay-Per-Click advertising, you’ve got an amazing level of Search Engine Optimisation, and you’ve got visitors flocking to see what you sell.

What happens if the images are pixelated product photographs you took in 2016 and haven’t got round to refreshing them with newer, more crisp photographs? Are they going to inspire your customers to part with their cash? Unlikely.

You need to allow your customers a full and immersive view of the products, from multiple angles, with a zoom option so that they can get up-close-and-personal. A customer who feels like they have a full view of what they’re about to buy is one who will buy with much more confidence.

Great Product Photographs reduce costly returns

Returns are a necessary evil for many brands, with plenty offering free returns. However, the cost of doing so is getting bigger and bigger, especially when 35% of online customers will return items they have purchased.

What can be completely avoidable as an eCommerce brand, however, and one of the biggest reasons for consumers returning products that they have purchased from online stores, is that the item looks completely different from the images on the website.

Professional product photography that accurately shows the items as they should appear, like the actual colour of it, and the finer details, should help you to ensure that whilst you may get inevitable returns, far fewer of them are because a customer felt misled by the images.

Great product photography is more shareable on social media

It is important to have a well-rounded strategy when it comes to your product photography. The current trend in marketing is “repurpose, repurpose, repurpose” and with social media, no brand can afford to simply use something once for a single purpose.

If you have a set of great product images on your website, reuse them in your brochure. Create content from them for social media, have themed carousels of your best products with links back to your website.

Social media platforms compress your images to save on the data needed to see them, so if you have low-quality product photographs, it’s guaranteed that they’ll look even worse on Facebook. Invest in high quality images first and foremost, so that they can survive that compression process.

A series of great product photographs can get up close and personal with your goods, showing them in their best possible light. They can bring out the personality of you and your brand, and what you stand for. Whether it’s food and drink photography with elegant lighting that brings out the quality, an on-location fitness product shoot with an edge, or a professional studio manufacturing product and CGI campaign images with a creative flair that takes your desires on board, a great photographer will provide you with everything you need to take your brand and your products to the next level for any promotional campaign.
